Ice dams form when heat from your living space escapes into the attic and warms the roof deck. Snow on the warm part of the roof melts, runs down to the cold eave that hangs past the heated wall below, and refreezes into a ridge of ice. Water then pools behind that ridge and backs up under your shingles and into the house. The root cause is almost always inadequate attic insulation and ventilation — not the snow itself.
